A steep, powerful river on the road to Tibet: Nepal's best short white-water rafting, canyoning and a 160 m bungee jump.

The Bhote Koshi ('river from Tibet') tumbles down from the border at Kodari through a narrow, forested gorge. Its steep gradient makes it one of the most exciting short rafting rivers in the world, with continuous rapids in the high-water months.

Riverside camps near Borde and Barabise run rafting, kayaking and canyoning trips, and a suspension bridge high above the gorge is the site of a famous bungee jump. The Araniko Highway follows the valley, so it is only about three hours from Kathmandu.

What to see and do

Raft the Bhote Koshi's continuous grade IV–V rapids on a one- or two-day trip, try canyoning in the side gorges, or jump from the suspension bridge high above the river. Riverside resorts offer tented camps and cottages. The road continues up the valley to Tatopani and the Kodari border.

Good to know

Only book with licensed, experienced rafting operators; this is a serious river. Water levels are too high in the monsoon, and the best rafting is in autumn and spring. Landslides can close the road after heavy rain.
