Helambu Trek
In Nepali: हेलम्बु पदयात्रा · Also known as: Yolmo · हेलम्बु

Helambu (Yolmo) is the valley system north-east of Kathmandu, home of the Hyolmo people, a Buddhist community related to the Sherpa. The trek can start by walking straight out of the city from Sundarijal over Shivapuri, then follows ridges through Chisapani, Kutumsang and Tharepati to Melamchi Gaon and Tarkeghyang.
Altitudes stay mostly below 3,600 m, lodges are comfortable and the views of Langtang and Jugal Himal are fine, making it one of the best short treks for families and those with limited time. It links with Gosaikunda over the Laurebina pass.
What to see and do
Walk through Hyolmo villages with whitewashed stupas, monasteries and apple orchards; visit the old monasteries at Tarkeghyang and Melamchi Gaon; and enjoy the views from Tharepati and Kutumsang. The Hyolmo people are known for their hospitality and distinctive songs and dances.
Good to know
The Helambu trek takes 5–8 days and is a good choice in spring when rhododendrons bloom. Shivapuri Nagarjun and Langtang park fees apply on parts of the route. Roads now reach several villages, allowing shorter variations.
