A goddess shrine on a 3,842 m summit reached by cable car, Nepal's most popular place to play in the snow.

Kalinchowk Bhagawati is a shrine of the goddess on a rocky peak above Charikot, surrounded by tridents and bells. Pilgrims have long walked up through the forest; since 2018 a cable car from Kuri village carries visitors most of the way.

In winter the top is covered in snow and fills with domestic tourists enjoying it, often for the first time. On clear days the view stretches along Gaurishankar, Rolwaling and the Jugal Himal. It gets very cold; dress warmly.

What to see and do

Take the cable car from Kuri, then climb the final steps to the shrine, where bells and tridents crowd the rocky summit. Enjoy the view of Gaurishankar and the Rolwaling and Jugal ranges, and in winter play in the snow on the slopes around Kuri, which has many simple hotels.

Good to know

The road can be blocked by snow in winter, and the summit is icy — wear proper shoes. At about 3,800 m, altitude can affect visitors who drive up in one day from Kathmandu; take it easy. The cable car has a fee and may close in bad weather.
