Sarangkot rises about 800 m above Phewa Lake on its northern side. Before dawn, crowds gather on its viewing platforms to watch the first light touch Dhaulagiri, the Annapurnas, Machhapuchhre and Manaslu, with the lake and city below in mist.
It is also one of the world's best-known paragliding sites: tandem flights launch from the slopes below the top and soar over the lake. You can drive up, or walk up from Lakeside in about two hours.
What to see and do
Arrive before sunrise at the main viewing tower or one of the terraces below it, and watch the light move from Dhaulagiri in the west across the Annapurnas to Manaslu. Afterwards, walk down through the village to Lakeside, or continue west along the ridge towards Kaski Kot, an old hilltop fort and temple.
Good to know
Taxis wait in Lakeside from about 4:30 am in season. Paragliding flights take off from late morning when thermals develop; book through licensed operators. Guesthouses in Sarangkot let you stay overnight for an easy sunrise.
