In 1767 the Malla king of Kathmandu, besieged by Prithvi Narayan Shah, asked the British East India Company for help. A force under Captain Kinloch marched up from the plains, but at Sindhuligadhi the Gorkhali defenders, using the steep terrain and ambushes, defeated it — Nepal's first battle with the British.
Remains of the fort and a memorial stand on the ridge beside the BP Highway, with views over the Kamala and Sunkoshi valleys. It is a good stop on the scenic drive between Kathmandu and the eastern Terai.
What to see and do
Visit the restored fort area, the memorial and small war museum, and walk the ridge for views of the Kamala valley. The BP Highway itself, running from Dhulikhel through the Sunkoshi valley to Bardibas, is a scenic drive.
Good to know
Sindhulimadhi (Kamalamai) has the nearest hotels. Sindhuli is known for its juicy junar (sweet oranges), sold along the highway in winter.
