Makalu
In Nepali: मकालु

Makalu stands alone, not attached to any neighbouring giant, which is why its sharp granite pyramid is so recognisable from Everest, Kanchenjunga and even from the hills of Ilam and Dhankuta. It was first climbed by a French expedition in 1955.
It is considered one of the hardest of the 8,000 m peaks because of its steep ridges and exposed summit pyramid. Most visitors see it from Makalu Base Camp in the Barun valley or from viewpoints such as Kala Patthar.
Where to see it
The best close views are from Makalu Base Camp in the Barun valley and from Swiss Base Camp nearby. From the Everest region, Makalu stands out to the east from Kala Patthar, Gokyo Ri and especially Chhukung Ri. Far to the south, it can be seen on clear days from the hills of Dhankuta, Ilam and Sandakpur, a sharp triangle on the horizon.
Climbing history
After the French first ascent in 1955, which put all nine members on top, the peak became known for its difficult routes — the West Pillar (1971) and the south-east ridge among them. Its isolated position means strong winds, and the final summit pyramid is steep and exposed.
Good to know
Climbing requires an expedition permit and serious experience. For trekkers, the Makalu Base Camp trek (about two weeks) is the way to experience the mountain up close.
