Jaleshwar Mahadev
In Nepali: जलेश्वर महादेव

Jaleshwar means 'lord in the water'. In the temple at the centre of the town, the Shiva linga lies in a pit several metres below the ground, usually surrounded by water. The site is counted among the important Shiva shrines of the Mithila region and is part of the Janakpur Parikrama tradition.
The temple has large ponds on either side and is especially crowded at Shivaratri and on Mondays in Shrawan. Jaleshwar is right on the Indian border, a short drive from Janakpur.
What to see and do
Descend the steps to see the linga in its sunken sanctum, walk around the temple's ponds, and explore the busy border bazaar. The temple draws large crowds during Shrawan when devotees bring holy water, and at Shivaratri.
Good to know
Jaleshwar is on the Indian border; stay aware of the open-border traffic. Janakpur is the most comfortable base for a day trip.
