Gadhimai Temple
In Nepali: गढीमाई मन्दिर
Gadhimai is a goddess of power worshipped at Bariyarpur in Bara district. Her fair, held every five years in the month of Mangsir, is one of the largest religious gatherings in South Asia.
The fair has been internationally known for mass animal sacrifice, which has been increasingly opposed by animal welfare groups and restricted by court orders; recent fairs have seen far fewer sacrifices. Outside fair years the temple is a quiet village shrine among fields.
What to see and do
Visit the temple in the village of Bariyarpur and its large grounds. During fair years, the area turns into a vast temporary town with markets, pilgrims' camps and performances.
Good to know
Fair years draw several million people; expect heavy crowds and difficult transport. The tradition of animal sacrifice is contested; many visitors come only for worship. Birgunj is the best base.
